about

A recording from an audition I had to perform at the Lake Worth (Florida) talent show. I passed the audition process and was invited to play.

The night of the show, I suffered a sore throat and was barely able to talk, much more, to sing.

I got a volunteer to sing. His main language was Spanish.

We didn't have time to practice.

Our time to perform was coming up. Then, we were introduced and walked up on stage.

He sang as best as he could--with great intensity and loudness.

He thought of the song as a punk rock anthem, something to be sung loudly. Originally, I had written the song "I feel aliver" as a kind-of children's song, a kid's musical, to be sung in harmony, something you might hear in a nursery rhyme or a musical from the 1920's.

He sang it in a punk rock style--very loud and intense and running around the stage like a caffeinated monkey surrounded by bananas.

I was yelling the lyrics with a sore throat while hammering the keyboard.

Our song was only a few minutes but it was intense and hilarious.

Afterward, the crowd cheered. So, I guess they liked it.

Maybe it's not so much the performance as the way you carry yourself through the performance that matters.

lyrics

verse 1:
I've got alleys to bike, before I sleep
In my quest for free food, I've got a schedule to keep

verse 2:
There's a third-hand store with snacks to spare
We'll find apples and cookies and carrots to share

verse 3:
Lord, Please bless me as I search in the night
An buffet of treats, an expired delight

verse 4:
Chocolate I crave, bread would be great
Samantha's juice not too far overdate
Samantha's juice not too far overdate

chorus:
I feel aliver, now that I'm a dumpster diver
Together, we're exploring, what other people are ignoring
I feel aliver, now that I'm a dumpster diver
Together, we're exploring, what other people are ignoring

verse 5:
We are the dumpster liberation front
Riding bicycles, out on the hunt
Lose the crowd, abandon the malls
With their credit card slaves, walking the halls

verse 6:
There's dumpster diver everywhere, looking for food, open to share
From New York City to Hong Kong, one man's trash is another man's song
From West Palm Beach to Burlington, Vermont, there's plenty of dumpsters for you to haunt
California to Mississippi, even if you're not a hippie

verse 7:
Are you curious? Join us tonight. Bring a smile and an appetite.
You'll find every dumpster has a prize, if you lift the lid and open your eyes
In the diving world, I'm blessed so much, the king of diving with the dumpster touch
We don't need a chip, we'll dive our food. We're dumpster divers with attitude. Dumpster divers with attitude!

chorus:
I feel aliver, now that I'm a dumpster diver
Together, we're exploring, what other people are ignoring
I feel aliver, now that I'm a dumpster diver
Together, we're exploring what other people are ignoring
